Man arrested for stealing courthouse rugs

A Jones County man is in jail for allegedly stealing the rug right out from under city officials - literally.

Jeffery Jefcoat of Laurel faces charges of petty larceny after allegedly stealing eight doormats from the county courthouse and the courthouse annex in Laurel.

Authorities said surveillence photos show Jefcoat taking the mats. Sheriff Alex Hodge said Jefcoat was recently fired from a company that cleaned doormats for the county.
