The University of Southern Mississippi made a promise to its students and the community, and lived up to it Monday.

The school created the Office of Sustainability, part of President Martha Saunders' commitment to the American College and University Presidents' climate initiative.

The office will be responsible for overseeing projects to help Southern Miss be more evnironmentally conscious.

"We know that the cost of utilities is going up; we know that the cost of gas is going up, and if we as a university can reduce our spending on those things, then we will have more money to spend on others," said Saunders.
She added a director for the office is expected to be named in the next few week, and changes to campus will be noticeable in the fall.
