Crews cleanup hazardous spill on Hwy 49

Covington County authorities are currently wrapping up the clean-up of a hazardous materials spill on Hwy 49.

Fire crews have been on the scene since about 10 p.m. Wednesday when the trailer of an 18-wheeler carrying a load of polymeric beads caught fire. That material is used to make polystyrene products.

Most of the load and the trailer were destroyed by the fire, but no one was injured. A section of the northbound lane of the highway has been closed while the debris is removed.

"I would hope and anticipate that we could have the scene cleared and possibly have standard traffic here on Hwy 49 hopefully between the 10 to 11 a.m. hour," said Collins Fire Chief John Pope. "But, expect a total complete clean-up by noon at the latest."

The truck was from a company based in Florida.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported there are now 12 cases of West Nile Virus in our state Thursday morning. Although, every case is serious, that number pales in comparison, to the 247 cases in 2012. Still, you have to put a human face onto these figures to really know what this virus is capable of doing.
