The Fourth of July is just around the corner, but before you celebrate with fireworks, there are safety precautions you should adhere to.

Officials at the Jones County Emergency Operations Center say that while fireworks can be fun, they can also also cause bodily injury and property damage. Additionally, Hattiesburg residents should be aware setting off fireworks in the Hub City is prohibited.

"Around July 4 and Christmas we see a number of preventable burn injuries and eye injuries," said Jones County Public Relations Coordinator Lance Chancellor. "The key to that is wear proper eye protection, follow manufacturers suggested usage guide and never let small children play with fireworks. That is a recipe for disaster."

You should also be aware despite the recent rain, many areas remain dry, and you should be careful not to cause any brush fires or potential forest fires.
