Dixie Youth baseball interrupted by gunman

A routine Dixie Youth baseball practice at Jaycee Park in Hattiesburg Wednesday was interrupted by an unknown gunman who fired several shots in the direction of the facility.

No one was injured in the incident, but witnesses say about four shots were fired from the street area near the park. They came very close to some 10-year-old all-stars who were on one of the fields around 10 p.m. Today, Dixie Youth officials said practices at the park will continue, but only during daytime hours.

"We'll do whatever we have to to protect our children, our coaches and our parents," said Hattiesburg Dixie Youth Baseball Association President Larry Doleac. "That's always going to be our number one priority. That's why we moved out of here, and I guess this is a reminder that maybe we did do the right thing and maybe we did it at the right time."
