Lamar County police respond to murder suicide attempt

One person is dead and another shot several times after an apparent murder-suicide attempt in Lamar County Tuesday night.

It happened just before 10 pm on Seneca Road near Lumberton.

A woman called 911 saying she had been shot several times. When Lamar County deputies arrived at the scene, they found a James Carter, 69, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and a 44-year-old woman with several gunshot wounds to the leg and lower torso.

A 22 caliber rifle was found at the scene.

Deputies are not releasing the name of the woman, who is from Picayune, but said she is in stable condition at Forrest General Hospital.

Authorities said carter was carrying a New Jersey driver's license. The shooting apparently stemmed from a domestic dispute.
