University students in Mississippi are about to see yet another increase in tuition.

The state college board has approved tuition hikes for the state's eight universities. Mississippi University for women will see the highest increase, just over 5 percent. Ole Miss will have the lowest, at 3-and-a-half percent.

The board also approved increases in room and board charges. Commissioner of Higher Education Tom Meredith said the increases are the result of national economic trends.

"I think everybody realizes that as costs go up as the cost of doing business go up the cost of taking part in that business goes up," said Meredith. "No one wants to raise tuition, but giving fuel prices, energy prices, the legislature this time did not have enough money to give us and increase."

The state operating budget for 2009 will be over $3 billion . That is a 6-and-a-half percent increase.
