Judge clears way for luxury student housing

A judge has cleared the way for for developers to build luxury student housing on Beverly Hills Drive in Hattiesburg.
The ruling by Special Judge Roger Clark overturned a Hattiesburg City Council decision prohibiting the construction of the complex by Kenney Properties.
At issue is a 30-acre tract of land in the Highlands neighborhood. The city and residents argued the apartments would cause massive traffic congestion and that there are too many apartments in Hattiesburg already.
The judge ruled the character of the Highlands neighborhood has changed and is moving from single family to multi family use.
He also said proposed changes at intersections in the area will improve traffic flow.

He ruled, with Southern Miss's student population expected to increase to 20,000 in the next five years with only 4,000 dorm rooms, the market is not oversaturated.
