Thieves learn gasoline and lighters do not mix

A desperate attempt to get free gasoline landed two Wayne County Teens in trouble, authorities said.

Cody King, 17, and a 16-year-old are accused of trying to steal gas from a lawn mower in a storage building on the grounds of Clara School.

One of the suspects allegedly used a lighter to see just how much gas was in the tank, and the result was a fire and $30,000 worth of damage.

Both suspects are being charged with malicious mischief. King will be tried as an adult, while the juvenile has his case pending in the Wayne County Youth Court.

Wayne County Sheriff John Farrior credits the Clara Fire Department for its speedy response.

"Luckily a passerby saw the fire and called in," said Farrior. "You can see by the backdrop that it could have been worse. At least a concerned citizen did report this."
