Veterans honored at annual cookout

The mother of a Mississippi soldier who was killed in Iraq addressed an annual gathering of veterans in Bay Springs this afternoon.  Rachel Lee, the mother of Marine corporal Dustin Lee, spoke to veterans and their families at a veterans cookout, hosted by Southern Industrial Contractors, Inc.

Corporal Lee was killed by an improvised explosive device in March of 2007, while on patrol with his bomb-detecting dog, Lex.  Lex was eventually adopted by the lee family and was present today.

Meanwhile, event organizers are mourning the recent passing of two noted veterans who often attended this event, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Jack Lucas, who died in Hattiesburg Thursday and Navajo code talker Merrill Sandoval, who died in Arizona 4 months ago.

This marked the 18th year for this veterans cookout.
