Old Hattiesburg High School arsonist sentenced

A man charged with arson in a fire that destroyed the Old Hattiesburg High School building last year has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Mikhael Powell, 19, pleaded guilty to arson before Forrest county Circuit Judge Robert Helfrich.

Helfrich placed Powell on three years of probation upon his release.

Powell was one of two suspects charged in the May 2007 fire. Jordan Poole, 18, of Hattiesburg, was also charged with arson.

Poole's trial was initially set for April but was delayed. Prosecutors said Powell has agreed to testify against Poole.
