Body discovered at Camp Shelby identified

Officials at Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg have confirmed the identity of a badly decomposed body discovered there last week.

Officals announced Friday the remains are of Pfc. Ryan Longnecker, 19, who went missing in August 2007 two weeks before his deployment to Iraq.

In addition, two military-issue weapons declared missing at the time of his disappearance were also recovered.

No cause of death has been reported. Funeral arrangements are pending.

The body was found in a wooded area several hundred yards off of Forrest Street near a motor pool on base. Officials have yet to explain how the body went undisovered even after U.S. Marshalls joined in the search.

    The Jones County Junior College Greene County Center and the Jasper County Center will close early on Tuesday due to winter weather.  The Greene County Center will suspend regular operations at 12:30 p.m., which includes all night classes held there.
