Body discovered at Camp Shelby may be missing soldier

Officials at Camp Shelby outside of Hattiesburg are reporting the discovery of a badly decomposed body this morning.

The remains are now believed to be that of a U.S. soldier.

A military criminal investigation unit from Fort Rucker, Ala., is on the scene trying to determine the identity of the body. It was found in a wooded area several hundred yards off of Forest Street near motor pool number nine.

Sources say military weapons were found along with the skeletal remains.

Officials have not revealed how the body was discovered or whether or not they have any clues as to the identity.

According to base officials, only one soldier is unaccounted for in recent months, Pfc. Ryan Longnecker, 19, who went AWOL in August 2007 two weeks before his deployment to Iraq.

Longnecker disappeared along with his handgun and rifle. Officials would not say whether or not they believe the body to be his.
