Collisions in Sumrall, Collins lead to fatalities

One person was killed and another seriously injured in Collins Wednesday when their truck collided with a log truck.

It happened just before noon at a red light along Hwy 49 inside the city limits. Officials said the truck headed south entered the turn lane and tried to cross the highway when it hit head-on with an 18-wheeler traveling north.

The names of the victim and injured have not been released. The red light was installed at the intersection after four children died in a car accident. Despite the light, local officials said the intersection continues to be dangerous.

Another head-on collison Wednesday left a local resident Dead in Sumrall.

Sumrall police said, Gregory Hudson, 47, was killed when his pick-up truck hit another vehicle on Hwy 42 near the Industrial Park.

Authorities said Hudson was headed east on Hwy 42 when he drove his truck into the other lane. Traffic was backed up for hours before authorities completely cleaned up the scene. The driver in the other vehicle is hospitalized for a fractured back. Local officials are investigating the crash.
