Jones County firefighters battle home blaze

Firefighters from six Jones County volunteer fire departments responded to a four-alarm blaze on Smith Chapel Road just outside of Sandersville around noon Wednesday.

Sandersville firefighters were the first on the scene and found the home to be fully engulfed in flames. Fears the blaze would spread to nearby homes and a nearby propane tank prompted officials to call in for additional help to fight the blaze. It took firefighters over an hour to get the fire under control.

"We had a solid wood frame home with wood walls interior and exterior - with wood floors," said Jones County Fire Council Spokesman Lance Chancellor. "It was a very difficult, hot, very aggressive fire to fight. But a very good fire attack got it knocked out. Unfortunately the home will be considered a total loss."

No one was home when the fire broke out, and no firefighters were injured while battling the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
