Details emerge in supervisor's murder

Authorities are still investigating the murder of Duncan Hatten, a former Stone County District 5 supervisor who was apparently murdered at his home Tuesday morning.

The Sun Herald reported Wednesday that Hatten's son, a Wiggins Fire Chief, discovered Hatten in the garage of his home at 11 a.m.

According to the Sun Herald, a Stone County sheriff's deputy checked the residence for signs of burglary after Hatten's home alarm was set off but saw no such signs and left.

The deputy checked inside the home and with Hatten, performed a perimeter check and then moved on.

Thirty minutes later, Hatten's son found him dead with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Both police and armed community members combed the countryside following news of Hatten's death.
