Sheriff to use new mobile command center

Lamar County Sheriff's Department officials are now more prepared to handle crisis situations in the field for extended periods of time.  This week, they showed the public their brand new Mobile Command Center.

It's 29-feet-long and it's a converted mobile home that was purchased from the Federal Emergency Management Agency with seized drug money.  The unit has a dispatch center, state-of-the-art computers, wireless internet capability and cellular phone service.

It also has fold-away cots for overnight deployments.

"The good thing about it is, if something happened to our dispatch, our central dispatch, we could totally operate out of this with no loss of service to anybody in the county," said Sheriff Danny Rigel.  "And it's portable, we could bring it anywhere we need to in the county or outside the county to help somebody else like people came in to help us during (Hurricane) Katrina," Rigel said.

The county has also purchased a new truck to tow the command center and three new 4-wheel, all-terrain vehicles.  The truck was also bought with drug seizure money and the 4-wheelers were obtained through a grant from the Department of Homeland Security.
