Ever wonder what you might find in a professional makeup artist's kit? There are a huge variety of brands and products on the market and every artist has their own favorites and "go-to" items, constantly updating and experimenting with what's new. But there are some products that everyone loves!
I have been lucky enough to work with make up artists, from East coast to West coast, on a variety of projects covering: theater, film, TV, fashion photography, runway, and even showgirls! Although each medium has its own requirements and limitations, there are some products you will see when you take a peak in almost everyone's kit.
Check out this list of beauty favorites, that not only makeup artists love, but also beauty editors, models and those in the know, keep tucked away in their own purses!
1. Bobbi Brown - "Bone" Eye shadow
A great neutral shade, this can be worn on its own to give your eyelid a clear allover coverage, or can act as a base and be blended with almost any shade of shadow.
2. Eye Tees- by Fran Wilson
At first glance these may look like ordinary Q-tips, but at a closer look you will see one end looks spun into a point, while the other end looks flattened out. These great little tools can be used not just as applicators, to smudge and blend, but are also handy for cleaning up any mishaps delicately and accurately.
3. CARGO - Lip Gloss Duo
A long time favorite of make up artists, this thick gloss has a great moisturizing quality and fabulous sheen! Easy to apply with lip brush or finger tips, the 2 colors can be blended together or worn alone.
4. Kiehl's - lip balm
Long considered a "cult" product, Kiehls has been selling this great lip moisturizer for more than..... years. Beauty tip: always apply a lip balm or ‘base' coat to your lips. This keeps your lips moisturized, makes them look plumper and keeps your lipstick or gloss in place longer.
5. Make-Up-Forever - Face & Body foundation
Designed for professional use, this versatile foundation can be used for almost any occasion including your everyday life. Applied in layers, with a sponge, brush or your fingertips, it can be used to create a heavy or light coverage. Great for your changing needs from day to evening and from Spring to Fall.
6. MAC - "Spice" Lipliner
A lipliner is a must-have to keep lipstick application in place, but one must be very careful that it does not take on a life of its own! MAC's spice lip liner is a great neutral color that blends as easily to most skin tones as it does to the lipstick being applied with it. Beauty Tip: Apply a very sharp pencil in light even strokes following the natural shape of your lips, do not draw a hard line around your mouth. If a liner is doing its job properly, it should not be visible once your lipstick or gloss is applied.
7. Maybelline - Great Lash Mascara
Every year this product is listed on a handful of "Must have" and "Favorite" lists so its almost impossible not to mention it! The pink tube is so easily recognizable it could almost be sold without a label! This fantastic mascara gives a great even coverage and keeps lashes separated. And the best part: it's available at almost any drugstore for only $.
8. Neutrogena - Oil Free Moisture
Every make up artist must have a moisturizer on hand to ensure their client's skin is moisturized well before applying any makeup. This product works well with almost any skin type and is popular for its oil free even coverage.
9. benefit - "benetint"
This makeup "stain" this will give your skin a naturally flushed or sunkissed look by adding color to your cheeks, and is versatile enough to add color wherever your face needs it. On your lips on its own or under gloss, or on your eyelids, just a drop of this magic liquid will wakeup your face with a punch of color in seconds!
10. Shu Uemura - Cream concealer
This easy to apply creamy concealer can be easily blended into any skin type, and leaves an almost invisible appearance with enough coverage to hide even the darkest circles! Worn alone or with foundation, this beauty product favorite can be found hiding in the makeup bags of many models, who swear by it.
