USM student turns herself in

A 20-year-old Southern Miss student was arrested this morning and charged with driving under the influence causing death.

Shelby Leigh Brown of Madison County turned herself in to Petal Police at around 10 a.m.

Brown was involved in an accident along the Evelyn Gandy Parkway that resulted in the death 20-year-old Kaitlyn Bryant of Sumrall earlier this month. Investigators say toxicology results showed Brown was over the legal limit at the time of the accident.

Brown appeared in court before Judge Sheila Smallwood where bond was set at $100,000.

Investigators say Brown was traveling the wrong way on the parkway when she struck Bryant's vehicle

If convicted, Brown could face five to twenty five years in jail.
