Morning commuters who are trying to dodge the construction everyday surrounding USM have had no alternative route to get to work since last summer, but workers say they are nearning completion
"We're trying to get finished with the surface of the concrete, we're finishing the grinding, we have to seal the joints and provide the final strap, and we'll be essentially through with Hardy Street," said construction worker Dave Steele
In addition to the state making the road skid resistant, they have also upgraded the traffic signals from a time based system to a vehicle detection system at each intersection.
The next phase of the project will focus on Hwy 49 as the state attempts to improve the flow of traffic between the two roads.
Crews are widening Hwy 49 to provide a dual left turn lane for those traveling north and turning west on Hardy Street. That work is scheduled to be completed by October.
