Train collision in Eastabuchie sends one woman to hospital

A Seminary woman is in critical condition this morning after her car collided with a train.

Driving alone in older-model Ford Mustang, she was struck by an Amtrack passenger train at a crossing along  Eastabuchie Road in Jones County around 9:30 a.m.

She was ejected from her vehicle, and the train conductor waited with her until emergency crews could arrive.

She was rushed to Forrest General Hospital.

The crossing where the crash occured has been an issue of some controversy recently. Two girls were killed there earlier this year when their car smashed into a freight train.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation threatened to close the crossing in 2000, but residents protested, saying they would prefer crossing guard mechanisms.

There have been four deaths at the crossing since 1986. A protected crossing is available to motorists 200 yards to the south.
