New bill would increase fines for copper theft

Two new bills being worked on by state lawmakers would make it harder for copper thieves to peddle their goods.

The bills introduced by the House and Senate would increase fines for both misdemeanors.

Damages worth more than $500 would carry a sentence of up to 10 years behind bars and a fine of up to $10,000.

The bills were presented in response to the rash of copper thefts across Mississippi.
