Laurel VFW hurt by rent increase

The Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Laurel is facing a major dilemma. They must either pay up or face eviction.

Recently, rent on the property jumped from $800 a month to $3,800 a month.

Members of VFW Post 3042 in Laurel are up in arms over their lease agreement with the city, which began more than 50 years ago. Since the initial agreement, the property has been turned over to the airport authority, which answers to the FAA.

The airport authority has agreed to let the post pay the normal $800 a month until someone else decides to rent the building.

Post commanders say if that happens veterans will no longer have a post to call home, because the non-profit organization ca not afford the rent increase.
