Intersection cameras still under debate

Transportation Commissioner Bill Minor says the legislature should decide whether cameras can be installed at traffic lights on state highways.

In February, lawmakers declined to act on several bills dealing with the legality of traffic cameras.

Representative Steve Holland of Plantersville amended the Mississippi department of transportation appropriations bill this month to prevent cities from using the cameras on state highways.

Meanwhile, several cities have contracts pending with traffic camera vendors. The Mississippi Department of Transportation has balked at approving cameras on state-owned highways. The city of Columbus has cameras up and running - but only on city streets not controlled by MDOT.
