Hattiesburg swears in 12 police recruits

Twelve men, known as recruit class 28, will soon be wearing the badge of a Hattiesburg Police Officer.

The men were sworn in as recruits today by Mayor Johnny DuPree. This is the first recruit class under Chief Frazier Bolton who took office in November. The men must first go through 15 weeks of police training where they'll learn everything from basic operations to specialized tactics. The men are expected to graduate in June.

"It'll cut down the amount of officers, and hopefully we can go to a new formula as far as our shift structure," said Hattiesburg Police Chief Cheif Frazier Bolton. "Once we get a full staff of officers, I think we can change that 12-hour shift structure."

Currently the police department has 123 officers; a full staff is 144.
