Student death at ECCC briefly closes campus

Classes are back in session at East Central Community College after a student died - apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot.

The shooting triggered a brief lockdown. Classes resumed after authorities determined there was no security concern.

ECCC president Phil Surphin said in a statement the student's body was found in his dormitory room. Officials had earlier said the incident was in the vicinity of Neshoba Hall.

Sutphin said a preliminary report from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation indicated the student, who hasn't been identified, took his own life.

A campus alert was posted on the school's Web site soon after the body was found.
