Longtime lawman passes away

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. for veteran lawman Jimmy Stringer of Columbia.

Stringer died at 65 after a lengthy illness. His career in law enforcement spanned five decades, beginning when he became a state trooper in 1968.

He worked his way up to chief of the Highway Patrol from 1995 to 1997. After his retirement, Stringer served two years as Columbia police chief.

Services will be held at New Hope Baptist church, with burial to follow at Lott Cemetery.
