The City of Hattiesburg will soon be taking on an erosion project after getting a federal grant of $751,000.
The City Council authorized the project at Tuesday's meeting. Mayor Johnny DuPree said the project spends no local tax dollars. It will help prevent erosion of an old landfill near downtown located next to area waterways.
Dupree said when rivers back up, the water erodes the land and washes old garbage downstream. City workers will use a type of rock and concrete to prevent that erosion.
"The good thing about it is we're $750,000 closer than we were this time last year, and we're going to have some work done on that property," said DuPree.
