A two-car accident on Interstate 59 north of Hattiesburg caused havoc for motorists and led to another, more serious, three-car wreck half a mile up the road.
Both collisions happened in the southbound lane of the interstate, about a mile south of the Monroe Road exit. In the second accident, traffic was apparently slowing down because of the emergency lights, but the vehicles couldn't reduce their speed in time to avoid a crash.
State troopers and volunteer firefighters from North Forrest arriving on the scene found one of the drivers trapped in her car. She was taken to Forrest General by Rescue 7 helicopter.
Two other people involved in the accident were taken to Forrest General by ambulance, with minor injuries.
Traffic in the southbound lane came to a halt while rescue efforts were in progress, and it was backed up four miles to the Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport.
No injuries are reported in the first of those two wrecks.
