Fred Johnson, Pike Co.'s first black sheriff, dead at 68

Pike County's first black sheriff who served two terms, Fred Johnson, is dead after a lengthy illness. He was 68.

Johnson died Tuesday at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are pending.

A list of survivors isn't immediately available.

Johnson served as sheriff from 1996-2004.

Johnson's longtime friend and Pike County's first black coroner, Percy Pittman, says Johnson was a caring person who wanted to do things right for the community he lived in.
