Editorial: Radar Option for Sheriffs

January 29, 2008

A state senator from our viewing area, Sen. Billy Hudson, has introduced a bill in the Legislature to allow Mississippi sheriffs the option of using radar to help police speeding on the county roads in their respective counties.  This is not the first time this issue has come before state lawmakers, and the State Sheriffs Association has asked for this additional tool in their effort to make the roads safer.

Hudson is a former county supervisor who says he has seen firsthand how many country roads have been turned into racetracks.  Both city police and the Highway Patrol use radar to control speeding in their jurisdictions.  We don't understand the lawmakers' reluctance to give the same option to the sheriff's departments throughout our state.  It may well save a lot of lives and prevent a lot of injuries. We support this bill to allow the sheriffs to use radar and hope the Legislature will see fit to make it law.
