Suspect in Meridian gas station shooting released

Prosecutors have dropped charges against a suspect in the 2006 shooting death of a Meridian gas station attendant.

Lauderdale County District Attorney Bilbo Mitchell says the evidence against Nicholas McLaurin was not strong enough to hold him any longer. McLaurin has been released from the county jail.

McLaurin had been held without bond since his November 2006 arrested in the shooting death of Maria Hudson, who authorities said was killed during a robbery.

Mitchell says the surveillance video was not good quality and there was a discrepancy in identifying McLaurin.

Mitchell says the case will go into the cold case file as an unsolved murder.
