Suspect in rape of elderly woman has hearing Tuesday

The man accused in the brutal beating and rape that left an elderly woman fighting for her life in a Jackson hospital faces a preliminary hearing Tuesday.

Kirby Shavers of Canton was arrested August 26th after the Rankin County Sheriff's Department was tipped to his whereabouts.

Shavers was taken to the Rankin County jail and booked on a sexual battery charge and has been held there without bond.

Police said Shavers allegedly broke into the home of a 73-year-old woman, tied up her 45-year-old grandson, then attacked the woman. Authorities said they identified Shavers because he was wearing a work shirt bearing his name and a company logo during the attack.
