Autopsy results show Alec Knight died of gunshot, not stab wounds

Autopsy results show that an 18-year-old, Perry County star athlete died of a gunshot wound, not self-inflicted stab wounds, as he claimed to emergency medical personnel shortly before he died Thursday afternoon.  An autopsy completed today shows that Alec Knight died of a shotgun wound to the stomach, according to New Augusta Police Chief Curtis Gates.

Gates says the autopsy revealed no evidence of a knife wound.  Knight died at this mobile home around 4-30 p.m.  According to first responders, knight claimed twice that he had stabbed himself.  But, his girlfriend told authorities Knight had shot himself with a sawed-off shotgun.

Just 4 days before his death, Knight had been charged with simple assault for allegedly beating up a juvenile.  Chief Gates says other forensic tests are scheduled on Knight's body and the weapon that may have caused his death.

He also says they have not ruled out the possibility of suicide.
