RIP Jake, 9/11 and Katrina rescue dog

His master is mourning the passing of Jake, the 9/11 rescue dog.

The black Lab who burrowed through smoking debris at the World Trade Center site has died of cancer.

Mary Flood had the 12-year-old put to sleep after one last stroll through the fields and a dip in the creek near their home in Oakley, Utah. Flood says Jake had been wracked with pain and fever.

No one can say whether the dog would have gotten sick if he hadn't been exposed to the toxic air in Lower Manhattan. But cancer in dogs Jake's age is common.

The Labrador also searched for survivors after Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi.
