Alabama suspect captured in Jackson County

Mississippi authorities have an Alabama man in custody after he led deputies from two counties in a pursuit through Jackson County.

Deputies with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department arrested 27-year-old Phay Souphanthong of Irvington Sunday on felony evasion.

On Sunday, deputies with the Mobile County Sheriff's Department allegedly began pursuing a 1991 Toyota Corolla driven by Souphanthong into Jackson County, where local deputies joined the pursuit.

The suspect avoided spike strips at the 55-mile marker and allegedly tried to ram sheriff's deputies several times during the pursuit before running out of gas.

Alabama authorities said Souphanthong is an Asian Gang member with an extensive criminal history that dates back to 1998. He also faces charges that he violated his parole and awaits extradition to Mobile County.
