Town hosts 29th Watermelon Festival

For nearly a generation, the town of Mize has been paying tribute to the watermelon and helping a local fire department with an annual festival.

For 29 years to be exact, folks in South Mississippi have been taking part in watermelon-eating contests and enjoying live music and other activities at the annual Mize Watermelon Festival. It's a major fundraiser for the Mize Volunteer Fire Department.

Today, that event took place at the city park in cooler than expected July temperatures.  In addition to the melons and the music, there were lots of arts and crafts to be bought and plenty of games for kids.

The Mize Volunteer Fire Department can certainly use the funds raised at this year's event.  The department is in the process of building a new station in the town.
