Taking a walk or riding a bike through the City of Petal will be a little bit safer in the near future, thanks to both the state and federal government. That's because the Friendly City has just been awarded a $213,000 grant to build sidewalks and bike lanes.
The money is part of "Mississippi Safe Routes to School." That's a federally-funded program that helps communities create safe walking and biking areas within two miles of elementary and middle schools.
$3,000 of the grant will be used for safety education.
The remainder will go towards the construction of 5 miles of sidewalk and the striping of 1 mile of bike lanes on city streets.
