New Miss Mississippi is 2nd African-American to win crown

Kimberly Morgan was crowned Miss

Mississippi tonight (Saturday) at the Vicksburg Convention Center.

Morgan won a 15-thousand dollar scholarship and will attempt to

become the fifth Mississippian to win the Miss America pageant.

It was her second attempt to win the state pageant.

Morgan, who was Miss Heritage, is the second African-American

contestant to win the contest.

She won the talent preliminary on Thursday after singing the

song "Summertime."

The Oxford native was born with severe hearing loss, but

multiple surgeries solved the problem and today she is a music


The Alcorn State University student was crowned by Miss

Mississippi 2007 Taryn Foshee.

Miss University Amanda Harmon was the first runner-up. She won a

10-thousand dollar scholarship.

Miss Leaf River Valley Natalie Goldman was second runner-up,

followed by Miss New South Anna Tadlock and Miss Mississippi State

Danielle Smith.
