Camp Shelby is celebrating the opening of the C-17 Assault Runway — one of only two such airstrips in the world.
Officials attended a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday that included congressmen Gene Taylor and Chip Pickering.
The airstrip is designed to train crews for short-field landing and takeoff missions using only 3,000 feet of runway.
Mississippi National Guard Adjutant General Harold Cross says it's an asset to Mississippi and the nation.
The $10 million project took a year and a half to complete.
