2 children die when overloaded jon boat overturns

Two children have died in a boating accident in Memphis.

City police identify the victims as eleven-year-old Carneshia Banks and ten-year-old Karlton Parker.

The agency now say the boat was more heavily loaded than earlier reports indicated -- ten people in a 10-to-12-foot jon boat.

Authorities say there were four adults and six children in the boat when it pulled away from a dock at a small lake Wednesday evening. Their ages ranged from seven to 48 years old.

The report says the boat began taking on water as it left the shore and turned over about 100 yards into the lake.

Authorities say the water in Lake Robco is ten to 15 feet deep were the boat went down. The lake is in a residential area of south Memphis, near the Mississippi border.

It took about a half-hour to find the girl.

Both children were pronounced dead at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center.

Seven other people were taken to hospitals in non-critical condition.
