Lampton listed in good condition; suffers from bruised spinal cord

U.S. Attorney Dunn Lampton remained hospitalized Thursday with a bruised spinal cord, a day after he was in an off-road Jeep accident on his farm in Pike County.

His office said Lampton was listed in good condition -- an improvement from an earlier listing of stable.   He is in River Oaks Hospital in Flowood.

Pike County Sheriff Mark Shepherd says the accident happened in a remote, wooded area that could NOT be reached by ambulance. The sheriff said Lampton was in a Jeep with two other people when the accident occurred, but no one else was injured.

Shepherd is a friend of Lampton's and familiar with the property where Lampton was hurt. The sheriff says the prosecutor's daughter, Sidney, went for help after the accident.

Shepherd says Lampton was conscious when paramedics reached him.

Lampton has been U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi since 2001.

He made headlines recently when he prosecuted James Ford Seale, a reputed Ku Klux Klansman. Seale was convicted this month on kidnapping and conspiracy charges tied to the deadly attacks on two black teenagers 43 years ago.
