Harrison Co. traffic death toll continues to rise

Five traffic deaths in as many days bring Harrison County's highway death toll this year to 17, a 240 percent increase over the same period last year.

Only five traffic deaths were reported countywide in 2006 from January through June 27th.

Since Friday, five people have died in four crashes countywide on rural roads, Highway 49 and Interstate 10.

As of Wednesday, 17 people have died in 14 crashes this year.

Public safety officials say they haven't drawn conclusions yet from these statistics.

They believe that inattention may be a leading cause of fatal crashes.
