Cochran, Lott split on immigration vote

Mississippi's senators split Tuesday on the Senate's 64-35 vote to jump-start a stalled immigration measure to grant legal status of millions of unlawful immigrants.

Senator Trent Lott voted to resume Senate debate on the bill. Senator Thad Cochran voted against reconsidering the bill.

Supporters of the legislation needed 60 votes to bring it up again.

The bill still faces formidable obstacles in the Senate, including bitter opposition by GOP conservatives and attempts by some waverers in both parties to revise its key elements.
