Hub council backs street closings

Hattiesburg city leaders are supporting the desire of downtown businesses to close off some streets to allow for pedestrians only.

Council members voted on a resolution to support the idea during their regular meeting Tuesday night.

Mayor Johnny DuPree says he will soon meet with the downtown association and owners of the businesses to set the criteria for the street closings.

The city currently closes streets downtown but only after the businesses request permission.  This new resolution would allow the streets to be closed permanently.

The criteria will be based on the feedback the city gets from the downtown business owners.
