Southern Mississippi provost resigns

The University of Southern Mississippi President Dr. Martha Saunders announced Friday that Southern Miss Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Jay Grimes has resigned his position.

Dr. Grimes' resignation is effective July 31, 2007, and an interim provost will be appointed at that time. He will continue serving the university as professor in its Gulf Coast Research Laboratory's Department of Coastal Sciences.

Grimes came to Southern Miss in 1997 after serving as a microbiologist and program manager with the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Health and Environmental Research. He has offered to continue to assist the university's efforts to pursue federal grant funding in marine science and other areas of scientific research.
