Day after win, new Laurel councilman goes to work

Less than 24 hours after winning a special election, Ward 3 Councilman Tony Thaxton was sworn in Wednesday afternoon.

Thaxton won the by a landslide with 72 percent of the votes.

Thaxton is a retired attorney who practiced law in Laurel for over 30 years.

Soon after taking his oath, Thaxton went to work, participating in the council's agenda-setting meeting.

Thaxton used the late Councilman Ed Smith's bible during the ceremony. He says he's honored to finish out Smith's remaining term.
