Red Cross website helps families connect after storms

The American Red Cross is urging families to register on a new website that will help them stay connected with relatives after a hurricane.

It's free to register on -- the Red Cross' online safe and well list.

After a hurricane, people can update their information with a message such as "I am safe and well" either through the same site or by calling a toll-free phone number. That way, friends and relatives searching the site will see the message, and hopefully stop worrying if they can't immediately get in touch after a storm.

Red Cross officials want to require the online registration as part of registration at hurricane shelters.  Red Cross officials recommend using the site in the event of an emergency.
