A FBI preliminary Uniform Crime Report for 2006 says Jackson had a 42 percent increase in violent crime and a 10 percent increase in property crime.

Jackson ranked 24th in the nation in homicides per capita in 2006 -- tying it with Atlanta and Orlando, Florida.

Robberies in Jackson jumped 67 percent in 2006, the largest increase for the city in any crime category. Last year, there were nearly three robberies a day.

Jackson had more than 21 robberies per one thousand residents, placing it 20th among cities in the FBI report and ahead of Chicago and Dallas.
