One of the biggest Memorial Day Services was held in Downtown Hattiesburg. Over 30 local organizations got together to host the 24th Annual Hattiesburg Memorial Day program. The event was held at Veterans Memorial Park. During the program, 171 veteran's names were read aloud and there were also many other veterans who were recognized during the ceremony.
Hattiesburg's mayor Johnny DuPree says the memorial event was extremely important for folks to celebrate.
"It's important that we always remember those who make the ultimate sacrifice for us. I mean just today we're going to go out and bar-b-que we're going to do all those kinds of things that make us happy celebrating with friends and its because of the men and women who died for us," says DuPree.
Mayor DuPree honored several local military mothers with roses during the Memorial Day program.
